Scarface

Al Pacino is a native New York’s Bronx, Pacino was born on April 25, 1940. Following a period of award-winning successes on the stage, he made his feature debut in Me. Native (1969, he is known for his forceful dramatic presentation, Al Pacino is most closely associated with the roles of Michael Corleone in the Godfather1972 as well as Scarface 1983.With his intense and gritty performances, Al Pacino was an original in the acting as a profession and his constant screen dominance has established him as one of the movies’ true legends. In the film Scarface Al Pacino was violent throughout the film. The type of actor Al Pacino is a “Personality actor for personality actors are at same level, playing themselves” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs 2011). The reason I chose this type of actor was that Al Pacino has a very strong personality with vague language and violence and he also plays this same role in other films like The Godfather. This is his kind of role to play in films and it is his true person.

Michelle Pfeiffer was born in Santa Ana, California to Dick and Donna Pfeiffer. She has been nominated for three Oscars, twenty-five wins and thirty nominations. In Scarface, she plays the character of a sophisticated woman who becomes addicted to cocaine and then drifts apart. I am classifying Pfeiffer as a wild card, because the character she plays in the film is different than the characters she has played in Dark Shadows (2012) and Batman Returns (1992). It seems that she wasn’t able to fit into a wide variety of disparate characters. (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011).

Steven Bauer born on December 2, 1956 in Havana, Cuba as Ernesto Echevarria. He is an actor and producer known for Scarface (1983) He has been nominated for two Golden Globes. In Scarface, Steven Bauer becomes Al Pacino’s best friend who helps him get a way out and then gets assasinated by his friend. I name Steven as personality actor, as our textbook states, “Personality actors are at some level playing the4mselves.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). Steven is in this category, he is being himself.

Titanic

Title: Titanic

Writer: James Cameron

Director: James Cameron

Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher

July 24, 2014

We are discussing the categories of sound and the scene I chose is the shipwreck from the movie Titanic.

The first category is music. The music was composed James Horner. The music used for this scene was an orchestra, music used for this scene is very intense.

The second category is Dialogue, it is  written by the screenwriter, James Cameron. In this scene the ship’s crew spotted the iceberg and notified the captain. They tried real hard to turn the ship

around but didn’t succed. The ship crashed into the iceberg and slowly began to fill with water.

The third and final category is sound effects. This scene had a lot of unique sounds. For example, as the captain was turning the wheel, the effect used resembled foot steps. When the ship was pacing towards the iceberg they used a whistling sound to imitate the sound of the wind

and when the ship hit the iceberg there was a crunching sound.

These different types of sounds affected the audience in this scene, it showed the fear all the employees and passengers had at that moment. It is very heart pounding and difficult to watch.

The key category of sound being in the entire film is the groaning sound of the sinking, breaking vessel.

Lighting used on the film “Scarface”

Title: Scarface

Writer: Oliver Stone

Director: Brian De Palma

Year: 1983

Actors: Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer

Story:

In the scene where “Al Pacino (Tony Montana and Michelle Pfeiffer are at the night club, the director used traditional three point lighting, which is based on three primary sources of light, a bright key light and slightly dimmer fill light to the upper right and left sides of the camera”(Goodykoontz, & Jacob,2011). In this film lighting was very strong whereas low key lighting was barely used. The benefits of that style of lighting used was that by having bright and filler lights would help the audience feel how real the film was. Scarface scenes looked real.  For the scene where there are two kids and their mother, and Al Pacino was following their car that was going to be exploded the lighting had a glare but it was filmed outdoors. All other scenes had good three point lighting except at the end when Gina shots Tony Montana the scene is too dark and blurred. I Believe that the scene was perfect as it is and if there had been different choices made, it would have changed the whole movie and maybe the audience wouldn’t have cared too much for this movie. The graphic language used in this movie is what the audience critizise, The actors could have used less of those words and everything would have turned out fine. This film was and still is famous to a lot of people. It is a gangster movie genre.
